  Getting Around

The city is well served by an inexpensive and comprehensive transport system. One of the best ways for tourists to experience the city is with a Lisboa card available from stations and tourist offices. Below is a guide to the various ways of getting around the city;

•  Taxis

Taxis are relatively inexpensive in Lisbon and are plentiful. There are many ranks located around the city and they can also be flagged down. All city centre taxis are metered.

•  Metro

Lisbon 's metro system is modern, clean and efficient and comprises of four lines. Trains start at 6.30am and run until 1.00am .

•  Buses and Trams

Lisbon has an extensive bus and tram network. Tickets can be purchased from any metro station or from the Carris kiosks around the city. Buses are numerous and run throughout the day with eight night bus lines running between 12.30am and 5.00am

•  Funiculars and the Santa Justa Elevador

Lisbon has three funiculars accessing the city's hills;

- Bica runs from Rua São Paulo to Bairro Alto

- Gloria runs from Restauradores to Bairro Alto

- Lavra runs from the Gloria terminal to Campo dos Mártires da Pátria.

The Santa Justa Elevador is over a hundred years old and runs 45m vertically from the Rua de Santa Justa to the Largo do Carmo.

•  Ferries

Ferries cross the river throughout the day from Praça do Comercio to a number of destinations.

•  Tips and regulations for driving in/ around Lisbon :

It is fairly easy to hire a car in Lisbon , either from the airport or various downtown locations, however, it is worth noting the following;

  • Drivers must be 18 and hold a full driving license which is in either English of Portuguese or contains a full translation.
  • Drivers must carry all documentation (including passport) at all times.
  • Drinking and driving is severely punished. The legal limit is 0.05% alcohol in the blood. Much over this could result in imprisonment.
  • Speed limits are generally 50km/h (31mph) in built up areas, 90km/h (75mph) on main roads and 120km/h (75mph) on motorways (Auto-Estradas)
  • Seatbelts must be worn at all times
  • Overtaking trams is not permitted when passengers are disembarking
  • Roads outside of the city can often be poorly lit at night and may not be as well maintained as those in Lisbon itself
  • Portuguese drivers do not have the best reputation – always drive defensively
  • Parking can be expensive

Communications

•  Telephone – the dialing code for Portugal is +351 and the area code for Lisbon is 21. for example to dial from the UK it would be +(00) 351 21 and the number.

•  Mobiles – There are three mobile operators in Portugal , TMN, Vodafone and Optimus. As when traveling to any foreign country, you should check with your home network operator regarding access and call costs whilst abroad.

•  Public telephones – These can be used with coins, credit cards or phone cards. Phone cards are widely available from Post Offices, Telecom Portugal shops and some local shops.

•  Post Offices – These are generally open between 8.30am and 6.30pm . Sending a postcard to the UK can take up to five days to reach its destination.

•  Internet – This is widely available in hotels, internet cafés, libraries and a variety of other locations.

•  Other - Lisbon Guide “Follow Me Lisboa” – Is widely available from most tourist locations such as hotels, tourist information, museums etc. It contains a variety of information on things to do, events, eating out, shopping etc.
