Emergency – The Emergency number for Police, Fire Service or Ambulance is 112
Medical – As with all travel abroad, we recommend that you take out your own medical insurance policy, however, Portugal does have a reciprocal medical agreement with other EU member states meaning that all emergency medical treatment is free provided the traveler has an EHIC card (must be obtained in the UK before travel). Secondary or follow up medical treatment such as X-rays must be paid for which is why medical insurance is so strongly recommended.
Hospitals – There are two hospitals in Lisbon with Accident and Emergency centres. These are:
Hospital Sao José, Rua José António Serrano, Tel: +351 21-884-1000
Hospital Santa Maria , Rua Prof Egas Moniz, Tel: +351 21-780-5000
Personal Safety – As with any large city, personal theft is always a possibility and Lisbon is no exception. Simple precautions can be taken to minimise risk. These include the following:
- Take small amounts of cash with you and make sure to spread the cash about your person rather than keeping it in one bag or pocket
- Leave all important documentation such as tickets, passports, additional travelers cheques etc. in the safe at your hotel
- Do not make things easy for thieves – don't hang around at ATMs counting money, don't leave your valuables unattended, try to hide valuable items
- If in doubt, ask at your hotel if there are areas that should be avoided
